Hey everyone!  My name is Megan Kounnas and I am SO happy to be an art teacher.  I have an enormous love and appreciation for art of all kinds.  Ever since I can remember, I’ve loved to make art, look at other people’s art, and learn about the history of art.  I’m sure my parents helped form this passion from an early age by taking me to art museums, traveling with me around the world and entering me into various art and drawing competitions.

After completing five years at Western Michigan University in the Gwen Frostic School of Art, I received my B.A. in Art Education and B.A. in Spanish Education.  I became certified to teach art in the State of Michigan, the State of Illinois and the country of the Cayman Islands.  I later received my level 1 and level 2 certifications in teaching International Baccalaureate Visual Arts, which is subject 6 in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program.  I am constantly finding ways to develop my knowledge of art education and to my surprise, the most beneficial way to learn new techniques and media is through the students I teach.

I personally believe that anyone can learn how to be an artist.  It takes an open mind, trust in the instructor and patience, but once these things are mastered, the brain is a clean slate to learn with, and anyone can be successful at any age.  Most people don’t understand how to properly ‘see’ things in order to reproduce them onto a canvas.  I try to help students learn techniques that will help them slow down and visually represent the ideas that are so commonly stuck in their heads.  I’ve had quite a bit of experience with people from ages one to late adulthood, and all have finished courses with far more confidence in their artistic abilities than before they started.

I lived for the past five years in the Cayman Islands where I taught K-12 art at Cayman International School and also taught private lessons to adults and children.  I relocated and am currently living in New York City where I continue to teach private and group lessons both in my home and traveling to clients’ homes.
